Reflecting on the Past Year: Questions to Guide Your Growth

As the year comes to a close, taking time to pause and reflect can be incredibly powerful. Why? Because reflecting on your values, goals, and life journey helps you gain clarity on what truly matters, and how you want to “show up” in different areas of your life moving forward.

In my therapeutic work, I’ve noticed that encouraging exploration and mindfulness often leads to meaningful, values-based action steps. Therefore, setting aside time for reflection can help you identify what worked, what didn’t, and what you’d like to change. With that in mind, here are some of my favorite questions to guide your process.

Reflecting on the Past Year

  • Which of my needs were most important? (Examples: Connection, Physical Well-Being, Honesty, Peace, Autonomy, Meaning)
  • Have I been receiving enough support?
  • Did I have the work-life balance I desired?
  • Who has inspired me?
  • Has my idea of “success” changed at all?
  • What was the most difficult challenge I faced?
  • What is one change I made that I’m proud of?
  • What is one mistake I made—and what did I learn from it?
  • What advice would I give myself if I could travel back to the start of the year?

As you consider these questions, notice which ones feel most meaningful. Often, the ones that stand out point to your core values and priorities. In addition, they can highlight areas where you want to grow.

Looking Ahead to the Next Year

  • What values would I like to align with more? (Examples: kindness, self-compassion, patience, acceptance, flexibility)
  • What would I like to let go of?
  • How would I like my relationships to be different?
  • How would I like my professional life to change?
  • What is one fun thing I really want to do?
  • What is one change I would like to make for myself?
  • What barriers might get in the way—and what creative ways can I use to overcome them?

In addition, think about how these changes connect to your long-term goals. For example, if you want more balance, what small steps can you take now to make that happen?
